German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Athens
The Athens Department was founded in 1874 as the second institute after Rome and as the second foreign institute in Athens (after the École Française d'Athènes) and has been housed in a classicist building commissioned by Heinrich Schliemann since 1887. Today, the Athens Department, along with other foreign archaeological schools in Athens, is a member of a large scientific community and an integral part of the lives of archaeologists who work temporarily or permanently in Athens, also because of its library, which now comprises around 80,000 volumes. From the very beginning, it not only carries out its own research and excavations, but also supports and promotes the work of other German scientists.
