The Center for History and Civilization of Byzantium, founded by P. Lemerle in 1972, is one of the components of UMR 8167 Orient and Mediterranean. It is part of the "Mediterranean and African Worlds Pole" at the Institute of Civilizations of the Collège de France and serves as a hub for the majority of French Byzantinists.
