The Archaeological Institute is a unique, central scientific research institution in Serbia. It was founded in 1947 within the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and since 1961 it has been an independent institution. For several decades, the Archaeological Institute has been leading the research of the most important archaeological sites, localities and monuments in Serbia. The Archaeological Institute develops and improves archeology as a social and humanistic science, and the activities of the associates are aimed at encouraging and expanding international cooperation, continuous publication of scientific results, as well as popularizing archeology and developing awareness of the importance of archaeological heritage.
